A Guide to Nintendo 64 Games

Nintendo 64 Release Dates

First Release Nintendo 64 Games

The Nintendo 64 Console first released in the U.S. and Canada on September 29, 1996. The N64 console retailed at $199.95 and only launched with 2 video game titles: Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. It took Nintendo over a month to release 2 more Nintendo 64 titles – Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Wave Race 64. Mortal Kombat Trilogy was the first M-rated video game to be released on the N64. After a few short weeks, the console received it’s first T-rated video game with the release of Killer Instinct Gold, which many gamers know as the port of Killer Instinct 2 from the arcade.

Fun Fact: Mortal Kombat Trilogy was also released on PlayStation 1, Sega Saturn, and PC, while Killer Instinct Gold was exclusive to the N64 system, giving it a competitive edge in sales.

Last Release Nintendo 64 Games

The last 2 Nintendo 64 games released were NFL Blitz Special Edition and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3, with their release dates being 9 months apart. The last cartridge video game Nintendo published for the N64 was Mario Party 3, which released on May 6th 2001. In fact, 2001 was the final year for Nintendo 64 releases, with a roster of several highly acclaimed and sought after games such as Paper Mario, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, and Pokemon Stadium 2.

Fun Fact: The only M-Rated Nintendo 64 games to display an extra advisory/parental warning label were Conker’s Bad Fur Day, South Park 64, South Park Chef’s Luv Shack, and South Park Rally. This was mainly due to the cartoon nature of the characters displayed on the cover boxes.

Expansion Pak Release Nintendo 64 Games

The Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak, released November 1999, is an add-on accessory that upgrades the console by increasing it’s ram storage from 4MB to 8MB. The memory expansion pak plugs into the front console port, in place of the jumper pak.

The following N64 games were designed and released specifically for use with the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. In fact, these games won’t even function without it!

The following games are enhanced by the N64 expansion pak for a much smoother experience, but do no require the add-on accessory to function.

  • Gauntlet Legends
  • Turok 2: Seeds Of Evil
  • Road Rash 64
  • Shadow Man
  • Star Wars: Episode I Racer
  • San Francisco Rush 2049
  • Hybrid Heaven
  • South Park  64
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Pokemon Stadium 2
  • Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage

Best N64 Games

N64 Games That Are Better Than PS1 Versions

There are a number of non-sport video games that were released on both the N64 and PS1. Although there is an endless debate on which console is superior, there are several video games that many gamers agree are better on the N64.

The games are:

  • 007: The World is Not Enough
  • WWF Warzone
  • WWF Attitude
  • South Park 64
  • Shadow Man 64
  • Gauntlet Legends
  • Mortal Kombat 4
  • Rayman 2 (the Sega Dreamcast port is the definitive version of this game, and known as the best port)

Why are they better? Well, the PS1 WWF games lack game play content and suffer from terrible loading times. South Park 64 has far superior graphics and audio, with more content. The World is Not Enough 64 has a multiplayer mode, which the PS1 version does not. Shadow Man on the PS1 is terribly glitchy with a horrid frame rate. And Mortal Kombat 4 on N64 has almost no load times and runs much smoother.

Fun Fact: Shadow Man 64 is censored. Only the Sega Dreamcast and PC version of the game are truly uncut.
